Service plan or pay per visit?

Whether a plumbing service plan is worth it comes down to its written terms against what you would pay per visit. This site found no regulator's figure for plan fees, so get the fee and exclusions in writing, then compare. Without those, pay per visit.

What would tip this toward signing up?

How do you work out whether the fee pays for itself?

This site found no regulator's figure for a plumbing service plan fee, and this site found no dated survey of what plans charge. Any number you see is one seller's offer, so this page does not name a typical price. Get the fee from the firm, in writing, and include any renewal price.

The other side of the sum has at least rough figures. HomeAdvisor data summarized on Bob Vila in a 2023 survey summary, dated June of that year, lists a typical job at $180 to $489, averaging $331, service call fees at $100 to $350, and trip fees at $50 to $300. This national snapshot has aged, and your town's prices will differ, so lean on local quotes when you can.

Then do plain arithmetic. Take the visits you honestly expect in a year, price them at local quotes, and compare with the plan fee plus anything the plan still charges. If the plan only beats pay-per-visit by assuming calls you have never needed, it is not saving you money. Flat rate or hourly helps decode how those visit prices get quoted.

Who answers for the plan, and who does the work?

The firm selling the plan is the one you would chase, so check it first. License rules vary by place: Washington requires a licensed plumbing contractor, Illinois requires contractors to register, and Texas licenses plumbers through a state board. See licensed or unlicensed and your state rules for more. Ask who will actually turn up, and whether that person is licensed where a license applies.

Timing has a legal edge too. Under the federal Cooling-Off Rule, a repair or maintenance visit you asked for is excluded, but extras sold during it, beyond parts needed for the repair, are not. The rule's threshold for a sale at your home is $25, as of November 2026, and state law may add rights. Ask for the cancellation notice if a plan is sold at your kitchen table. Take this as general information rather than legal advice.

One local sample of service wording is Central Plumbing & HVAC, run by the same team as this site. Read the page only for how a firm can set out its plumbing services and whether it states licensing, not as a recommendation. It works solely in Bucks and Montgomery counties, PA, which leaves out most readers.

Words to use

"What is the yearly fee, and what will it be when the plan renews?"

"Please send the full terms, including what is excluded, before anything gets signed."

"On a covered visit, what would still be charged, in dollars?"

"How is the plan cancelled, and is any of the fee refunded?"

Also asked

How much should a plumbing service plan cost?
No regulator's figure or dated survey was found, so this site gives no typical price. Compare written offers from local firms against what you would spend on visits. Treat a claimed typical fee as sales wording until you can see where it came from.
Do plan members really get priority service?
Only what the contract promises counts. Ask for the promised response time in writing and what happens if the firm misses it. For the urgent side of that question, see call tonight or wait.
Can a plan be cancelled after signing at home?
Possibly. The federal rule gives until midnight of the third business day for covered home sales, with conditions and exclusions. State law may add rights. See cancel or keep the contract for how the conditions work.
