Before You Hire a Plumber

Right now / Get out first, Call tonight, Wait till morning

Call a plumber tonight or wait till morning?

Emergency plumber or wait? If you smell gas, leave now. Otherwise close the main shutoff if you can reach it dry. Call tonight if water keeps coming or sewage is inside. If nothing is spreading, morning is reasonable.

What would move this from morning to tonight?

How much does calling tonight add to the bill?

The only dated figure this site found is old. A 2023 survey summary on Bob Vila, last updated June 2023 and based on HomeAdvisor, puts the after-hours premium at $100 to $350 as a flat add-on, or else time and a half or triple the hourly rate. It is national and could be out of date. Local prices vary.

That summary sets leak repair at $150 to $450, against $1,000 to $5,000 for restoring water damage. Those are different jobs, so this is no formula. It does show why water still running can justify paying more at night, and why a stopped leak usually does not.

The real number comes from one question, asked before anyone drives over: what is the total charge to come out tonight? More on that trade-off is on emergency rate or next day.

Who is answering for the work at this hour?

Ask who is coming and which company they work for. Licensing differs by place. Washington requires plumbers to hold state certification, with an exception for many lines outside a building, and requires a visible badge on the job. In Texas, a state board licenses plumbers. In Illinois, the state public health department does. Your state may differ, so check state rules.

On home repair scams, the FTC says to check the license through state or county government and to request proof of insurance. A late-night look-up may not be practical. Getting the license number now and checking it in the morning still leaves a record, and agreeing to a visit does not commit you to a large job.

Words to use

"The main is off and the leak has stopped. Is there any reason this cannot wait until morning?"

"What is the total charge just to come out tonight, and what does that cover?"

"What is your license number, and which company will the plumber be working for?"

"If this waits until morning, what is your earliest slot and your regular visit charge?"

Also asked

Is a wet ceiling an emergency if the main water is already off?
It depends on whether the water has stopped and how close it is to anything electrical. If it has reached a light or outlet, stay clear and ring the power company or 911 from somewhere dry. If it has stopped and is clear of electrics, a morning visit is reasonable, though drying may need attention sooner.
A plumber on the phone says it cannot wait. Should that settle it?
Not by itself. Ask what would get worse overnight with the main off, and listen for a specific answer. The FTC treats sign-now pressure as a warning sign. Take the first who answers or keep calling covers what to ask before you say yes.
Is it safe to wait till morning if the shutoff will not fully close?
Treat that as a tonight problem. Do not force the valve, because the point is to stop water, not to break something new. Call the water utility's emergency line and explain that the valve will not close. Shut it off or wait for the plumber has more on who to call.
