Can wait / Flat-rate price or Hourly billing
Flat-rate or hourly plumber?
For plumber flat rate vs hourly, a flat-rate price suits a defined job because the number comes first. Hourly billing suits an unknown problem, as long as you get the rate, the minimum and a stopping point in writing.

How do the two ways of billing compare on one job?
| Flat-rate price | Hourly billing | |
|---|---|---|
| What you agree | One price for a named job | A rate, plus time and parts |
| Known before work | The total, if the scope holds | Only the rate and any minimum |
| 2023 figure | Basic jobs around $100 to $400 | $45 to $200 an hour |
| Who bears slow work | Mostly the plumber | Mostly you |
| Who bears a surprise | You, once scope changes | You, as the hours add up |
| Main thing to pin down | Exactly what the price includes | Who is billed at which rate |

When would the other way of billing win?
- It is an after-hours visit: emergency terms may replace both, so read emergency rate or next day.
- The flat price comes with pressure to sign now for a discount: the FTC treats that as a warning sign, so slow down.
- The work opens a wall or replaces pipe: scope can shift, so ask how a change gets priced and approved. California requires a signed written change order.
- The firm charges a visit fee before it will quote either way: compare with free estimate or paid visit.
What do these prices look like in dollars?
The dated numbers available come from Bob Vila's 2023 summary, built on HomeAdvisor data and updated that June. Treat them as a national snapshot that may have aged; your local market will differ and may run higher. It gives $100 to $400 as a flat fee for basic jobs and $45 to $200 an hour overall: apprentices $45 to $90, journey-level plumbers $70 to $120, masters $90 to $200 or more. Service call fees of $100 to $350 are said to typically include hour one, and trip fees can land anywhere from $50 to $300.
So an hourly quote can hide a floor. Ask whether a fee is added on top of the rate or absorbed into it. For after-hours work, the same summary lists either a flat $100 to $350 extra or time and a half to triple the usual rate.
One more number can confuse people. O*NET lists a 2025 median wage of $30.67 an hour for plumbers. That is what the worker earns, not what you pay, and a bill also carries the rest of running a business.

Who is actually doing the hours you pay for?
Hourly billing only makes sense if you know who is on the clock. Texas, for example, separates Tradesman Plumber-Limited, Journeyman and Master licenses, and the summary above prices skill levels differently. Ask who is coming and at what rate. Washington goes further: certified plumbers there must keep a badge in view at work, an easy thing to check. Rules elsewhere vary, so see state rules.
A flat price needs one check: can the firm tell you what is inside it? If a line names an angle stop, for instance, this valve section at Plumbing Supply and More, a merchant run by the same team as this site, lists what one is. Seeing it can make the line easier to question. There is no need to buy it there.
Either way, get it on paper; the FTC's checklist for a contract includes leaving no blank spaces. If you end up holding two written prices, one quote or three covers what to do with them.
Words to use
"If this is flat-rate, what exactly is included, and what would make the price change?"
"If this is hourly, what is the rate for each person, and is there a minimum?"
"Is the trip fee or service call on top of that, or part of it?"
"Please call me before the bill goes past the amount we agree today."
Also asked
- Are flat-rate plumbers more expensive than hourly ones?
- No dated comparison was found, so this site cannot say. The 2023 summary gives ranges for each, not a head-to-head. The fair test is the same job priced both ways, in writing, by firms you could actually hire. Keep the FTC's caution about the lowest number in mind.
- Can a flat rate change after the work starts?
- Ask before you agree. A flat price only holds for the scope written down, so the useful question is what counts as a change and who approves it. California requires a signed written change order. Other states may differ, and the written estimate should describe the work either way.
- Does a plumber's hourly rate include the drive?
- Sometimes, and the only way to know is to ask. The 2023 summary lists trip fees at $50 to $300, plus service call fees at $100 to $350 that reportedly include the first hour. Either may stack on the rate or absorb it, depending on the firm.
