How this site works

This is a publication that helps homeowners choose and deal with a plumber. It is not a plumber or a referral service, takes no calls, books no work and sends nobody to your house.
It has no connection to any plumbing company with a similar name. If you are looking for a particular firm, this is not its website.
How the pages are made
Each page takes one decision and sets out who each option tends to suit. Rules and figures come from the government, utility and court pages listed at the foot of each page, with the place and date named. Where a page says "this site's judgment" or gives a practical suggestion with no source, that is what it is. No firm is ranked or scored, and nothing here has been tried out in a test.
Prices are hard to source. The one survey used is a national summary last updated in June 2023, so treat it as rough and get a local written price. Where no dated figure could be found, the page says so.
Some official sites could not be reached when these pages were written. A state or figure that could not be checked is left out rather than guessed. Some federal consumer advice is paraphrased, so follow the link for the agency's exact wording.

Plumbing Supply & More, SoftPro Water Systems, Quality Water Treatment and Central Plumbing & HVAC are run by the same team as this site. Pages that link to them say so beside the link. You never need to buy from them to use this site, and a link is not a recommendation over anyone else.
What this site is not
It is not legal, insurance or safety advice for your particular house. Gas smells, water near electrics and sewage in the house each have their own first steps on the right now pages. Repairs belong to a qualified person, and the only hands-on step described here is closing the main water shutoff.
Pictures and videos
Photographs are credited on the picture credits page. Generated pictures are labeled in their captions, and in the picture description on list pages. No photo is presented as a plumber or customer of any firm, and work crews shown have no connection with this site. Videos come from public agencies and utilities.
