Take the first plumber who answers or keep calling?

To avoid emergency plumber scams, close the main if you can reach it dry and smell no gas. That buys time. Take the first plumber only if water still runs and they give a price, license number and company name.

What would change your mind mid-call?

What is a fair emergency price?

The nearest published guide is a 2023 survey summary. Bob Vila's page, updated that June from HomeAdvisor data, gives national figures, possibly out of date, and prices differ locally. By its numbers, emergency work costs $100 to $350 on top, or runs time and a half or triple, and trip fees are $50 to $300. A quote well outside that range is a reason to ask why. It is not proof of a scam.

The lowest quote is not automatically the right one, the FTC says. It also warns against paying everything at the start, and says the last payment waits until you are happy with the finished work. It warns against agreeing to contractor financing without comparing loan terms, since some scams end in a loan against your home. The plumber's financing or your bank has more.

Who answers if the plumber turns out to be a problem?

Get the company's name, address, phone and license number, if one is required, before they start. The FTC's contract list adds dates and a payment schedule, and leaves no blanks. Then check. California's contractor board, Washington's Labor & Industries, Texas's plumbing board and Colorado's plumbing board all offer a look-up. In Washington, a plumbing badge must be visible on the job, and the department says registration lowers risk without guaranteeing anything. Your state may differ; see state rules.

A federal cooling-off rule exists, but do not assume it helps or fails you in an emergency. Under 16 CFR 429.0, it has an emergency exclusion with conditions, including a separate handwritten statement from you, and a repair visit you requested is excluded except for extras sold beyond necessary parts. State law may add rights. None of this is legal advice, only general information. See cancel or keep the contract.

Words to use

"Before you send anyone: what is the company's name, and what is the license number?"

"What is the total to come out now, and will you send that in writing?"

"Paying by card or check. Is that accepted, and who is the payment made out to?"

"Please do not start until the written price is signed. Nothing gets left blank."

"The main is off, so a couple more calls are happening. Can you hold that price for an hour?"

Also asked

What gives away an emergency plumber scam on the phone?
Listen for a refusal to give a license number, insurance or written contract, a demand for cash up front, or a discount that disappears unless you sign now. The FTC names those warning signs. Washington Labor & Industries adds large deposits and payments to a personal name. None proves a scam, but each is a reason to keep calling.
Is it a red flag if the plumber will not quote a price on the phone?
Not always, since a plumber may not know the full job unseen. But they can still state what it costs to come out and what that covers. A refusal to give even that is a reason to try someone else, if the main is holding.
Can a plumber's license be checked at night?
Some states have online look-ups, including California's contractor board and Washington's Labor & Industries, so try yours on the spot. If you cannot, take the license number now, check it in the morning, and hold off on any large payment until then.
